The Jacquard loom.
Hole or no hole. Lift or stay. A machine that read.
A chain of punched cards, laced end to end — each card, one row of the weave.

A pattern you could hold in your hands.
In a workshop in Lyon, Joseph Marie Jacquard fitted the drawloom with an attachment that changed what a machine could be asked to do. Above the loom hung a chain of stiff cards, each pierced with holes. As the loom took each pass of the weft, one card was pressed against a bank of needles. Where a hole fell, the needle slipped through and its hook stayed in the path of the lifting blade, raising the warp thread; where the card was solid, the needle was pushed back and its hook — and thread — stayed down.
The pattern was no longer carried in the weaver’s hands and memory. It lived in the cards. Change the cards, and the very same loom would weave something entirely new.

Punch a card. Weave the cloth.
Each square is one hook. Punch a hole and its warp thread lifts to the surface as dark ink; leave it solid and the vermilion weft crosses over instead. Press weave to feed the chain through, one card at a time.

One choice, a thousand times over.
Look closely at what a hole decides. Not a colour, not a picture — only this: up, or down. Lift, or stay. Every flower and every letter a Jacquard loom has ever woven is assembled from that single two-way choice, repeated across the width of the cloth and down the length of the chain.
It is binary, punched into cardboard, and it arrives decades before the first electronics. The loom does not understand the pattern. It reads the cards, faithfully, one row at a time — and the pattern appears.

Babbage borrows the cards.
The idea travelled. In London, Charles Babbage adopted punched cards to feed instructions and numbers to his Analytical Engine, the calculating machine he designed but never finished building. His collaborator Ada Lovelace saw what the borrowing implied, and wrote the line that still describes the whole enterprise:
“The Analytical Engine weaves algebraical patterns just as the Jacquard-loom weaves flowers and leaves.”— Ada Lovelace, 1843
Jacquard’s own likeness made the point in silk. A woven portrait of him took roughly twenty-four thousand cards to render, so fine it was mistaken for an engraving. Babbage kept one — a picture that was, in truth, a program.

Holes, all the way to the mainframe.
The cards outlived the loom. In 1890 Herman Hollerith used punched cards to tabulate the United States census, and the company he founded became part of the lineage that grew into IBM. Deep into the twentieth century a program was still a stack of cards — holes and spaces, read one row at a time, exactly as in Lyon.
The machines changed beyond recognition. The idea at their heart did not: a hole, or no hole, and a reader patient enough to follow the thread.
